Grenfell Tower.

On 24th June 2017 the UK witnessed the worst fire disaster since Piper Alpha in 1998.

72 people died, 70 were injured and 223 escaped.

In the wake of this tradegy organisations have emerged including Grenfell United, Justice4grenfell and Grenfell Action Group. All organisations have survivors amongst their members.Their stated aims include prosecution of those responsible.

Like many disasters in the UK a Public Inquiry has been set up by the government. A prominent person is appointed, by government, as the lead.

Many assume or believe the inquiry will lead to prosecutions. The purpose of an inquiry does not include prosecution - seeking justice. It makes recommendations to respective parties. Recommendations have no legal basis.

The following document How Public Inquiries Can Lead to Change (Institute for Government) explains Public Inquiries.

I wish to help those effected by tradegies. Many give donations usually money. Some attend campaign events. Some deliver a service to the victims voluntarily or paid. I have done most of these things. But justice is not the outcome of these things.

How to enable justice?

There is a justice system. It has professionals, practices and unwritten rules. It has to be handled properly.

Where an organisation is brought into question the system still requires at least an individual representative for prosecution purposes.

The company who produced the infamous inferior cladding is Arconic. They are currently avoiding appearing at the inquiry. Please see link below.

People talk of defining moments - unfortunately this is another one where the people responsible will avoid the consequences of their actions because the system will protect their own - business, capitalism and the pursuit of profit at the expense of people. Inevitably working class people, black people, poor people, immigrants, those, who threw no fault of their own, seek a better life only for it to end tragically due to 'cutting corners' to improve profit.

The conscience of manufacturers, retailers and contractors can not be clear. They know, just like the cigarette makers, that their product was dangerous and not acceptable to safety standards.
