Normal (back to)
The concept of normal is being referred to as a post pandemic as if there had not been a pandemic. Returning to how it was. But how was it.
Many, in my opinion, mean returning to consuming as we/they did before. Particularly the leisure industries have been shut down during pandemic and therefore we have been unable to consume it.
However, our thirst for spending our cash lacks some analysis of this normal. During the pandemic contrary things have happened. The government has borrowed more than any other government had previously thus no normal there. Some businesses have made more profit than normal. Consumerism has reached new levels in terms of home delivery no normal there.
Meanwhile, resistance has increased BLM, XR, Sarah Everard response, Bristol no normal there. The Crisis is not a viral one it is an economic one. Governments across the world are trying to get out of recession officially started in 2008, Greece collapsed remember normal? We left EU. Normally we turn to our friends for help when in crisis no normal there.
The hankering for normal I do share but I also believe we need to break from consumerism it is modern slavery. Imagine toppling Amazon.
Cazoo a new used car company. Launched just before pandemic, less than two years old, is sponsoring a snooker tournament. This company has made no profit but can spend on sponsorship? Is this the normal you wish for?
The pause in our lives has, among many things, highlighted our reliance on normal consumerism. Going back to normal will not change anything for the better and implement what we have learnt from the pause.
Normal is not what is needed. Change is what is needed. Normal is what you feel is security, comfort, no threat, nice, easy. Normal is doing as you are told. Normal is hoping someone else will change the things you don't like. Normal is voting. Normal is escapism. Normal is what too many of us do to avoid change.
