Final day kudos 503 comments 24 #@*@#*@#!!!!
As I wander through the stats of ultra challenges via Strava, podcast and other media what's occurring? to use a sitcom phrase.
Humans have set challenges for millennia - it's not new. It's not even since that bloke who ran to Marathon - it was before him.
Sharon Gayter, female record holder of Jogle also 2020 during a pandemic. Who, why, how do these people do this stuff.
Privileged?
Well they are usually white, male clearly don't have a proper job and have time to go running for ten consecutive days. Admittedly about 95 miles a day!! Madness during a pandemic.
Damian Hall and Sabrina Verjee did Pennine Way records.
So why the sudden upsurge in long distance/ultra record attempts. Well the lack of races due to pandemic is being cited a lot. The need or planned to one day seems popular.
Personally I think the relative ease of doing something you have found an ability for which can be achieved by you as an individual is a motivator. And gives you focus during a difficult time.
Compare this with trying to get a group of people to agree to a plan of action to achieve a goal. Suddenly it's easier to just get out there and do it yourself. Obviously they had people help them - The Crew.
The drive to push oneself to the nth degree is admirable but I think we to readily appreciate it in comparison to a goal achieved by a group?
Having said all of that it's something I am interested in and lots of people are not.
This is clearly shown by the relative lack of kudos and comments. Imagine Mo Farah's exploits at The Olympics having only 500 kudos and 24 comments.
Running is one the most participated in activities in the UK! People are focussed on their own achievement not others? Unless you are a coach?
People expect/want conclusions, something constructive and useful from this article. I don't have anything. It's just my observations, thoughts, perceptions. Make of them what you will. Open ended musings.
